Nebraska youth, from 9 to 19 years of age, have their work showcased in the 20th annual “Celebration of Youth: Exuberance” open through Oct. 25 at UNL’s Robert Hillestad Textiles Gallery.
Items in the exhibit were selected from thousands displayed in the Clothing, Fashion Show, Home Environment and Quilt Quest divisions of the 2013 Nebraska State Fair. They range from stunning pieced quilts to an inventive Velociraptor costume made of foam, fabric and sculpted clay.
A complete list of exhibitors is available at http://go.unl.edu/ogks.
On Oct. 26, Textiles, Merchandising and Fashion Design will host workshops for the youth and parents, culminating in the exhibitors presenting a brief public talk about their design processes. The artists’ talks begin at 5 p.m. in the Home Economics Building, room 11. The talks are followed by a final opportunity to see the exhibition and a reception hosted by the Friends of the Robert Hillestad Textiles Gallery.
In honor the 20th anniversary exhibition, the Friends will recognize each exhibitor with a special tribute. Honorary member and emeritus professor Robert Hillestad and Friends president Lisa Warren will present each youth with an award during the program.
Jurors for the exhibition include Sarah Traush Hoops and Suzie Brown of Hastings, Sue Reiber of Gibbon, Jana Wasem Gibson of Aurora and Myrna DuBois of Norfolk, with guest curator Padmini Balaram, a visiting Fulbright lecturer from India.
The gallery is open 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays and by appointment. Admission is free. For more information, go to http://textilegallery.unl.edu or call 402-472-2911.
