Young Nebraska Scientists applications open for summer 2021

Middle and high school students can apply now for Young Nebraska Scientists opportunities in summer, 2021.

Each summer youths attend Young Nebraska Scientists camps, which include hands-on science experiences and recreation opportunities. Young Nebraska Scientists camp fees include meals and lodging, except online and day camps. Specifications about camp fees are listed online. Application deadline is May 1 for Young Nebraska Scientists 2021 camps. Need-based scholarships are available.

The camps are held throughout the state and the schedule is as follows:

For middle school students:
  • July 19-21: The Secret Life of Metals, Creighton University; Omaha
For high school students:
  • June 1-2: Chemistry and Nanoscience Behind Renewable Energy Technologies Camp (online only), University of Nebraska–Lincoln

  • June 7-11: Small but Mighty: A Hands-on Investigation of Viruses and Bacteria Camp, Bellevue University; Bellevue

  • June 21-24: Explorations in Biology Camp, Nebraska Wesleyan University; Lincoln

Applications close March 20 for Young Nebraska Scientists High School Researchers (juniors and seniors), with paid eight-week summer jobs in the labs of university scientists. Young Nebraska Scientists High School Researchers opportunities are mainly based in Lincoln, but new this year, there is one opportunity at the University of Nebraska at Omaha.

Young Nebraska Scientists is conducted by Nebraska EPSCoR to encourage youth participation in science, technology, engineering and math learning and careers. National Science Foundation funding helps keep Young Nebraska Scientists camp fees low. Faculty from Nebraska colleges and universities are camp leaders, and camp staff include university students.
