Working? Not working? Here’s how to handle Labor Day hours

Due to academic calendar changes made in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the University of Nebraska–Lincoln will be open for business on Labor Day (Sept. 7).

Under normal conditions, the university would be shut down on Labor Day, and leave-eligible employees would receive holiday pay. This year, the day will count as a working holiday, similar to President’s Day, Arbor Day, Columbus Day and Veterans Day. All monthly and biweekly employees who work on Labor Day will record a “banked holiday” for hours worked. The day will not count as a floating holiday. This option applies only to leave-eligible employees.

Leave Eligible Employees Not Working Labor Day (treat as a normal holiday)
  • Biweekly – Record Holiday (HOL) hours on timesheet.

  • Monthly – No entry required. Monthly employees will receive “regular” pay.

Leave Eligible Employees Working Labor Day
  • Biweekly – enter Banked Holiday Earned (BHOL) for the number of hours worked on their timesheet. Hours should not exceed the employee’s FTE hours.

  • Monthly – submit a request via ESS Leave using the Banked Holiday Earned (BHOL) leave type. Hours should not exceed the employee’s FTE hours.

The Banked Holiday Earned wage type will do both of the following things:

  • Pay the hours worked

  • Bank the same number of hours for use at a later date

Leave Eligible Employees Working a Partial Labor Day

Biweekly – enter BHOL for the hours worked and HOL for the hours not worked on their timesheet. Hours should not exceed the employee’s FTE hours. Example: Biweekly employee worked 6 hours on Sept. 7, enter: 6.00 BHOL and 2.00 HOL

Monthly – enter BHOL for hours worked, only. Do not enter HOL for the remaining hours not worked.

Important Reminders
  • Banked Holiday Earned expires in 12 months.

  • Banked Holiday Used (BKUS) code should be entered to record hours when used.

  • Vacation cannot be recorded on a holiday. Only HOL or BHOL can be entered.

  • Banked Holiday Earned (BHOL) should be entered after the hours have been worked on Sept. 7. The Banked Holiday Earned (BHOL) code will be available in as a leave option on Sept. 7.
