“Vox Lux,” a drama following a pop star’s meteoric rise to fame, opens Jan. 18 at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center.

The film stars Natalie Portman as Celeste, a teenager who survives a violent tragedy and is vaulted into the national spotlight after singing at a memorial service. “Vox Lux” follows Celeste throughout her career as she struggles with scandal, her personal life, and a comeback to the stage many years later.

“Vox Lux” is rated R for language, some strong violence and drug content. It plays through Jan. 31.

Continuing to show at the Ross is “Ben is Back,” a drama about the impact of addiction on a family. The film takes place during the turbulent 24 hours after 19-year-old son Ben, played by Lucas Hedges, unexpectedly returns home on Christmas Eve morning. His mother Holly, played by Julia Roberts, struggles with contrasting feelings of relief and distrust as her son struggles to stay clean and reveals unexpected truths to those around him.
