Visiting mathematician to deliver Rowlee Lecture

Ruy Exel
Ruy Exel

Ruy Exel, visiting mathematics professor from the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, will host this semester’s Howard Rowlee Lecture at 4 p.m. Nov. 2 in Avery Hall, Room 115. The free and public lecture will examine the concept of entropy in mathematics.

Exel will discuss how to measure the value of information and show how entropy can be used to gauge how much information one should expect to get with each question in games such as Twenty Questions or Mastermind.

The Howard Rowlee Lecture series seeks to bring internationally acclaimed scholars in mathematical sciences to Nebraska to promote public understanding of mathematical research and stimulate the environment for mathematics research at Nebraska.
