University to host events on civility, upcoming election

The University of Nebraska–Lincoln is hosting a number of virtual events to support and educate members of the campus community before and after the presidential election Nov. 3.

The University of Nebraska–Lincoln is hosting a series of virtual events to support and educate members of the campus community before and after the Nov. 3 presidential election.

The events feature discussions on mental health and how to stay resilient through this political season, opportunities to engage in civil discourse with others and a conversation on the potential legal issues that may arise after election day.

The schedule of events as of Oct. 28 is below. The Office of Diversity and Inclusion has also launched a list of inclusive election support and resource options.

Brown Bag It: A Luncheon Conversation

Noon to 1:30 pm Oct. 28, Zoom

Join campus community members in conversation around the upcoming election. Come with curiosity and a willingness to show respect for each other’s differences. This will be an opportunity to engage authentically and show a willingness to suspend judgment as we listen to understand.

Pre-registration is required to receive the Zoom link.

Wake Up Early: A Conversation Around the Breakfast Table

7:30 to 8:30 a.m. Oct. 29, Zoom

This event will be another opportunity to practice civil discourse and engage in conversation about the upcoming election.

Staying Resilient in Election Season

Noon to 1 p.m. Oct. 29, Zoom

Presented by CAPS and the LGBTQA+ Center, Staying Resilient in Election Season is designed for UNL students who identify as part of the LGBTQA+ community who are seeking a place to share, talk, and listen to others about concerns they are having in this election season.

2020 Election and Potential Legal Issues with Kyle Langvardt and Eric Berger

4 p.m. Oct. 29, Zoom

Nebraska College of Law professors Kyle Langvardt and Eric Berger will lead a discussion on the 2020 election and potential legal issues that may arise. Both professors have expertise in constitutional law. A Q&A session will follow their presentation.

Check-In Connection

Noon, Oct. 30, Zoom

Many of us feel stressed about the presidential election. Check-In Connection is a time each week to learn ways to check in with yourself to make sure that you are doing things to sustain your well-being. Join staff from Big Red Resilience and Well-being and well-being coaches as they introduce ways to support your well-being, reduce stress and remain resilient during these uneasy times.

Check-In Connection meets via Zoom on Fridays at noon Oct. 30 through Nov. 20.

Dish It Up!

Noon to 1 p.m. Nov. 3

It’s election day! Join the Office of Academic Success and Intercultural Services as they discuss the 2020 presidential election. Lesley Esters, interim director of William H. Thompson Scholars Learning Community, special projects manager for Student Affairs and coordinator of the Huskers Vote Coalition, will join the conversation.

Dish It Up: Post-Election

Noon to 1:30 p.m. Nov. 5

Join OASIS as they host a special edition of Dish It Up to discuss the results of the 2020 election. Members from the Department of Ethnic Studies will serve as panelists during the conversation.

Mindful Moment Drop-In Group

Noon to 12:30 p.m. and 12:30 to 1 p.m. Nov. 5, Zoom

Whether your mind is on final exams, the global pandemic, the current social climate or the election, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Learn to calm your mind by focusing on you. Research has shown that practicing mindfulness can reduce stress and increase feelings of competence. Join CAPS for a 20-minute guided mindfulness practice to help you feel centered, calm, and refocused.
