University staff spinoff is latest Nebraska Innovation Campus partner
Bolero Information Systems, a software development spinoff founded by staff members at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, is a web application development and design company that specializes in research administration and business process automation.
“We’re excited to have our first staff spinoff locate at NIC,” Duncan said. “By this group moving out of the university, they are able to expand and enhance their product to sell to other customers, generating economic development in the state and in turn improving an already great system for the university.”
While at Nebraska, the Bolero team developed a software platform to help manage complex research administration activities. The system automated several manual processes, streamlined reviews and provided reporting critical to the management of the university.
Tim Savage, former director of research information systems at the university who is now Bolero’s managing director and head of operations, said being at NIC will allow the company to remain close to the university amid the research and economic development activities at innovation campus.
“We see Nebraska Innovation Campus, with the environment they have created, the ties to the university and the fantastic facilities as a vital partner as we reach out to the broader market,” Savage said.
Four full-time employees and two student interns will transition from the university to Bolero. In addition, Bolero has hired one of their former Nebraska interns as a full-time developer.
Bolero will continue to work with the university, as well as the University of Nebraska at Omaha and the University of Nebraska at Kearney, on research administration systems. Bolero has also partnered with companies in London and Chicago to automate sales processes, and, most recently, with Tulane University to work on research administration.
“Everyone has better things to do than push paper around and punch numbers into a spreadsheet,” Savage said. “We’re here to help them get to those better things.”
NIC is a research campus designed to facilitate new and in-depth partnerships between the university and private sector businesses. At full build-out, NIC will be a 2.2-million square-foot campus with uniquely designed buildings and amenities that inspire creative activity and engagement, transforming ideas into global innovation. Tetrad Property Group is the private sector development partner for NIC.
