Two new films, “The Souvenir” and “The Proposal,” open July 5 at Nebraska’s Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center.

Also continuing to show is “Amazing Grace,” a documentary about Aretha Franklin.

In “The Souvenir,” a shy but ambitious film student (played by Honor Swinton Byrne) begins to find her voice as an artist while navigating a turbulent courtship. She defies her protective mother (Tilda Swinton) and concerned friends as she falls deeper into a relationship that comes dangerously close to destroying her dreams.

By acclaimed writer-director Joanna Hogg, “The Souvenir” is rated R for some sexuality, graphic nudity, drug material and language. It shows through July 18.

A debut film by artist Jill Magid, “The Proposal” documents her novel art project inspired by Mexican architect Luis Barragán.

Known as “the artist among architects,” Barragán is among the most celebrated building designers of the 20th century. Since his death in 1988, much of Barragán’s work has been locked away in a Swiss bunker.

In an attempt to resurrect Barragán’s life and art, Magid creates a daring proposition that becomes fascinating artwork.

“The Proposal,” which shows through July 11, is not rated.

Directed by Sydney Pollack, “Amazing Grace” includes never-before-seen film capturing Franklin’s live concert recording of what has become the most successful gospel album of all time.

The documentary features Franklin with a choir at the New Bethel Baptist Church in Watts, California, in January 1972. Due to technical difficulties, the film was never released publicly. Former Atlantic staff producer Alan Elliott and Pollack approached Warner Brothers about using new digital technology to match sound to picture and make a film out of the raw footage.

“Amazing Grace,” which is rated G for general audiences, shows through July 11.
