Hundreds of Huskers gather at Nebraska Union Plaza and Meier Commons greenspace during the total solar eclipse in 2017. The university will hold a Solar Social for the 2024 eclipse on April 8.

The University of Nebraska–Lincoln will celebrate the 2024 solar eclipse with a Solar Social, noon to 2 p.m. April 8.

The event, which is free and open to the campus community, will be on Nebraska Union Plaza on City Campus and the East Campus Loop. Special glasses for viewing the eclipse, as well as telescopes for taking a closer look, will be available at both locations.

The celebration will include a “Sun Salutation Yoga” session from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. on the Meier Commons north of the Nebraska Union. A limited number of yoga mats will be available. Participants are encouraged to bring a mat, blanket or towel if possible.

Other activities offered as part of the Solar Social are music, ice cream for purchase and educational booths.

The eclipse, which will cover about 80% of the sun over Lincoln, will take place at 1:53 p.m. Learn more about the 2024 total solar eclipse, including details about its path across the United States.
