September brings back game day traditions, outdoor fun

5 Things to Do
Exploring a new public park or lake is a great option for enjoying the pleasant September weather.

With classes back in full swing, fall weather on the horizon, and the excitement of some of the biggest athletics events bringing back many favorite traditions, September is a good month to be a Husker.

From brushing up on culinary skills to revisiting some favorite game day rituals and outdoor getaways, here’s a list of five things to help you make the most of your September.

Take a CookWell or Meal Prep class

Finding time to cook a proper meal can get a little tricky as the semester business sets in. Cooking classes at the Campus Recreation Center are great — and fun— ways to get some fresh ideas for easy, delicious home cooking. CookWell classes are $10 and focus on learning one culturally diverse recipe per class, while Meal Prep classes are $30 and cover the how-tos of meal preparation that help you get out ahead of your weekly dining schedule. Attend Husker Dialogues

7-8:30pm, Sept. 6 in the Nebraska Coliseum

Recommended for all first-year students, Husker Dialogues is where students learn to have brave conversations about building community, embracing difference and becoming engaged on campus. Listen to inspiring student speakers and participate in enlightening small group conversations with folks from around our campus community. Faculty and staff can also get involved by becoming a Conversation Guide.

Visit the Hyde Observatory

Open every Saturday from sundown to 11 p.m., the Hyde Observatory at Holmes Lake offers Lincoln residents a chance to peer into the dazzling night sky through a high-tech telescope. Whether a seasoned astronomer or an amateur stargazer, the Hyde Observatory is open for all to enjoy.

Have an outdoor adventure

After the smoldering summer heat has passed, September is the perfect month to get outdoors and try something new. We’ve put together this helpful list of fun outdoor lakes, parks and wildlife preserves to explore, while the Outdoor Adventure Center offers fun group adventures for all types of outdoor enthusiasts.

Get in the Husker spirit

It’s that special time of year…

Husker football and volleyball are back in action, bringing with them some of our favorite traditions. For a roadmap of the can’t-miss events on football Saturdays, visit our blog about football game day traditions. And if that’s not enough 5-time national championship-winning teams for you to follow in September, head over to the Bob Devaney Sports Center to cheer on our Husker Volleyball team.
