Sci Pop Talk delves into chemistry time capsule

Wednesday, February 12 7pm Peterson Room 221

For the next Sci Pop Talk, Mark Griep, professor of chemistry, will give a presentation on Rachel Lloyd, the first American woman to receive a doctorate in chemistry and will open a time capsule from 1916.

The event will start at 7 p.m. Feb. 12 in the Peterson Room of Love Library South.

The time capsule was put together to honor Nebraska’s chemistry department and Lloyd, who taught at Nebraska from 1887 to 1894.

Griep’s lab studies bacterial DNA replication proteins in search for new antibiotics. He was awarded the Helen M. Free Award for Public Outreach in 2017 from the American Chemical Society for his work on chemistry in movies and for raising awareness about Lloyd.

The series will continue Feb. 19 with a talk on elements in the Harry Potter world.
