In 2017, 7.4% of Nebraska high school students were physically hurt by someone they were dating during the past year and 8.4% of Nebraska students reported being forced to have sex during their lifetime.

Preventing interpersonal relationship violence among teens is the focus of the Dating and Sexual Violence Prevention Workshop, which will be held from 9 a.m. to noon March 25 at the Nebraska Union’s Regency Suite.

The event is hosted by the Nebraska Center for Research on Children, Youth, Families and Schools.

The event is free, but space is limited. Registration is required by March 18. Register online.

The interactive workshop will focus on practical, cost-effective, evidence-based strategies to prevent interpersonal relationship violence among teens. Katie Edwards, CYFS associate professor, and Emily Waterman, CYFS postdoctoral research associate, will outline definitions, statistics, causes and consequences of teen dating violence and sexual violence, and will provide an overview of strategies to reduce dating and sexual violence in youth and promote recovery among victims.

The event will feature ample discussion of strategies to reduce violence and promote recovery of young victims, as well as networking and collaboration opportunities among attendees, which will include educators, practitioners, advocates and others who work with Nebraska middle school and high school age youth.
