Reading club connects faculty, staff with first-gen students

Computer science major Caden Punteney is one of two students recently named an NSRI Strategic Deterrence Intern representing the University of Nebraska–Lincoln.

First Generation Nebraska is hosting a reading club for University of Nebraska–Lincoln faculty and staff who are interested in connecting with and supporting first-generation students.

Throughout the 2022-2023 academic year, members of the club will read an article or book chapter each month, then meet for an hour online to discuss the material in the context of their own work on campus. Those involved in the reading club will have opportunities to participate in and extend the conversation through the group’s Canvas discussion board space.

Topics to be explored include: - helping students master academia’s hidden curriculum - understanding first-gen students’ experiences in using campus resources - integrating student supports across campus.

The reading club is open to any faculty or staff employee interested in learning how to better include and offer support to first-generation students. For more information, or to register, click here.
