OLLI Movies that Matter series will look at immigration

What does it take to become a U.S. citizen?
The two films will tackle immigration in the United States.

The next films in the OLLI Movies that Matter series, “Out of Many, One: The Immigrant’s Story” and “Take 5: American Haze,” will show from 7 to 9 p.m. Nov. 14 at the Cornhusker Bank’s community room, 8310 O St.

OLLI Movies that Matter uses the power of documentary films to educate, inform and create dialogue.

The documentary “Out of Many, One” is a loving profile of the Citizenship Project, the New York Historical Society’s free program that assists green card holders in preparing for the USCIS Naturalization Exam, which tests knowledge of United States history and civics. Building to a naturalization ceremony conducted by Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the film captures the anxieties and sacrifices—as well as the pride—of hopeful American immigrants who have made the journey here.

“American Haze” offers a look at immigration through the personal lens of comedian and filmmaker Kiran Deol’s own family’s story. Viewers get a glimpse into the glories and gritty realities of the immigrant experience.

Following the showing, Max Graves, executive director of the Center for Legal Immigration Assistance in Lincoln, will lead a discussion on the films.

The event is free and open to the public. Registration is required. Register online or by telephone at 402-472-6265.
