Glenn Froning

Glenn Froning, 86, emeritus professor of food science and technology, died Jan. 29 in Lincoln.

Froning was born in Gray Summit, Missouri, Sept. 8, 1930, to Gilbert and Marie (Buchanan) Froning.

He obtained a bachelor degree in poultry science at the University of Missouri in 1953; a master’s degree in poultry products at the University of Missouri in 1957; and a doctorate in food science at the University of Minnesota in 1961.

Froning served as a first lieutenant in the U. S. Army in Korea from 1954-1956.

He was assistant professor of food service at Rutgers University from 1961-1963; assistant professor of poultry science at the University of Connecticut from 1963-1966; and moved to the University of Nebraska in 1966.

During the next 30 years, Froning chaired the poultry science department until it combined with animal science. He made a final move to food science and technology in the early 1980s.

He was the recipient of many honors and awards throughout his career, including election as a fellow in the Poultry Science Society. Froning is author/co-author of more than 200 scientific publications and articles on poultry meat and eggs.

Following his retirement, Froning continued consulting in his professional field with many years as food science and technology adviser to the American Egg Board.

Froning remained active in church coordinating the Mission Produce Table each year while serving on the property and facilities committee. As an active member of Northeast Kiwanis, he enjoyed volunteering with the Backpack Program at Belmont Elementary School, where his daughter teaches.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Lynne Froning of Lincoln; daughters, Teri Foley and Sharon Phillips of Lincoln; grandchildren, John and Abigail Foley, and Spencer Phillips of Lincoln; his brother, William Froning of Arlington, Texas; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; mother-in-law, Almira Stillman; and sister-in-law, Shirley Froning.

Visitation is 6 to 8 p.m. Feb. 3 at Roper and Sons, 4300 O St.

The funeral service is 11 a.m. Feb. 4 at Saint Paul United Methodist Church, 1144 M St. Memorials can be sent to Saint Paul United Methodist Church.
