New security system organizes bulk emails

A new tool to help curtail phishing an malicious attacks directed at campus email accounts is now issuing Proofpoint Daily Digests outlining bulk messages received.

The bulk emails, such as newsletters and vendor mailings, were previously directed to junk email folders. Through Proofpoint, these bulk messages are quarantined and made available to release via the daily digest or a web portal. Delivery of the daily digest messages started Sept. 20.

Individual users can opt out of the daily digest and manage quarantined mail online. For more information, click here.

“We acknowledge that changing the way email is delivered can cause some frustration and we thank you for your patience as we continue to evaluate the features in this important security system,” said Rick Haugerud, the university’s chief information security officer. “Protecting you as well as university data and systems are of primary importance.”

The university started using Proofpoint on Sept. 2. Thus far, it has prevented more than 350,000 phishing, spam and malicious emails from negatively affecting the university.
