Bolstered by a powerful lead performance from Trace Lysette, “Monica” follows a personal quest that’s as beautifully filmed as it is emotionally resonant. The film opens June 2 at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center.

“Monica” is an intimate portrait of a woman who, for the first time in 20 years, returns home to the Midwest to take care of her ailing mother. Through the themes of abandonment, aging, rejection, acceptance and forgiveness, we get to know Monica and her world made of pain, fear but also courage. “Monica” is a journey through the needs and desires of a woman who opens a cognitive look at the human condition.

“Monica” is showing at the Ross through June 15. It is rated R by the Motion Picture Association.

“The Thief Collector” is a captivating crime documentary about the heist one of the most valuable paintings of the 20th century, a1985, Willem de Kooning’s “Woman-Ochre,” which was brazenly cut from its frame while hanging at the University of Arizona Museum of Art. Thirty-two years later, the painting was found hanging in the New Mexico home of an eccentric married couple with a keen eye for great works but a very unconventional method of collecting them.

“The Thief Collector” is showing through June 8.
