A seminar on Aug. 17 will explore the stigma of mental health and substance use disorders and how terminology can address recovery.

The free “Language Matters: Lunch and Learn” session will be led by Dr. Kate Speck, a retired senior research manager at the University of Nebraska Public Policy Center. Speck, a licensed alcohol and drug abuse counselor, has more than 28 years of experience working in the field of addiction.

Offered via Zoom at noon, Aug. 17, the seminar aims to describe the impact of stigma in mental health and substance use disorders; discuss three approaches to support long-term recovery using strength-based language; and contrast current and alternative terminology in addressing recovery in mental health and substance use disorders.

The training is hosted by the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services and the Public Policy Center.
