After 45 years of serving the University of Nebraska–Lincoln in multiple roles, John Lohmeier, inventory, surplus and asset manager, has retired. His final day in the office was June 7.

“It’s been a pleasure working at UNL, and I thank the institution for 45 years of employment,” he said. “I treasure the friendships and relationships of those I’ve worked with over the years. So very many good people.”

Lohmeier began at the university as a mover in 1977, advancing to moving supervisor, property control supervisor and then manager. Nowadays he said he is “the guy who audits your department one day and finds you a nice desk or chair the next day.”

As inventory, surplus and asset manager, Lohmeier provided direction on the acquisition, transfer and verification of assets and disposal of surplus property. He opened the Inventory Surplus Warehouse each Wednesday for university faculty and staff to purchase items at low cost for departmental use. Now that will be in the hands of Tony Lloyd.

“Tony has been shadowing me for about a year and will step into this position without missing a beat,” Lohmeier said. “Tony is a great employee.”

Lohmeier said he will miss coming to work every day and hearing all of the “good mornings,” “goodnights” and various conversations in between.

“When you work somewhere for 45 years, you gain a lot of acquaintances and make a lot of friends,” Lohmeier said. “I will miss seeing everyone.”

Working with Bob Gier for the past 35 years was one thing Lohmeier enjoyed most about his time at Nebraska U.

“Regardless of the obstacles or the size of a project, Bob and I always came up with a solution on how to make everything work out,” he said. “Bob is a great friend and, without a doubt, the hardest-working person I know, and I appreciate all his assistance over the years.”

Outside of work, Lohmeier enjoys spending time with his wife, Wendy, daughters Tiffany and Savannah, son-in-laws Kerwin and Elliott, three grandsons, Kreytn, Kain and Noah, and two granddaughters, Brooklyn and Boston. He is an avid sports fan and enjoys hunting.
