“Life and Nothing More,” a film following the struggles of a single mother and her two children, and “Of Fathers and Sons,” an Oscar-nominated documentary on radical Islam in Syria, open Feb. 22 at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center.

Directed by Antonio Méndez Esparza, “Life and Nothing More” follows single mother Regina as she struggles to raise her two children. The film is a fictional story set in northern Florida, using documentary-style realism to explore themes of race, class and the bonds of family in modern America.

“Life and Nothing More” plays through Feb. 29.

Syrian director Talal Derki spent two years with a radical Islamist family to create “Of Fathers and Sons,” a documentary capturing the radicalization of Syrian children under a jihadist father. The film won the Grand Jury Prize for World Documentary at the Sundance Film Festival and is nominated for best Documentary Feature in the 2019 Academy Awards.

“Of Fathers and Sons” plays through Feb. 28.

Also continuing through Feb. 28 is “On Her Shoulders”, the story of Nadia Murad, a 23 year-old Yazidi genocide and ISIS slavery survivor.
