Karen Kassebaum, director of staff diversity and inclusion, will lead an “Ouch! That Stereotype Hurts!” training session at 2 p.m. Oct. 23 in the Jackie Gaughan Multicultural Center.

The session is the first Association for Women in Science event for faculty in the 2018-19 academic year.

The objective of the “Ouch!” program is to help participants:

  • Understand the impact of stereotypes and biased statements, even when casually used;

  • Identify the most common reasons people sit silent in the face of bias and stereotypes; and

  • Enhance individual skills for speaking up against stereotypes without blame or guilt.

The University of Nebraska–Lincoln became an institutional partner in the Association for Women in Science in 2017. As a part of the partnership, all Nebraska students — undergraduates and graduates — have free membership in the association.
