The refreshingly unconventional film “American Honey” and award-winning director Jay Craven’s “Northern Borders” and “Peter and John” open Oct. 28 at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center.

Filmed in Nebraska, “American Honey” is an unconventional coming-of-age story of a troubled teenage girl who runs away from home. With her magazine subscription sales crew, she finds herself in a lifestyle of partying, law bending and young love.

Craven’s “Northern Borders,” based on Howard Frank Mosher’s novel, tells the story of a 10-year-old boy, Austen Kittredge, who goes to live on his grandparents’ farm in Vermont. He finds family secrets and has wild adventures. Feeling stuck in a broken household, Austen plans a way out. He quickly finds himself stranded and with no option but to navigate his way out.

“Peter and John,” based on the 19th century novel “Pierre et Jean” by Guy de Maupassant, tells the story of two brothers whose relationship is strained. The younger brother receives an unexpected inheritance and both become attracted to the same young woman on their island.

Craven will participate in question and answer sessions with the audience following Oct 28 opening night screenings at the Ross

Both “Northern Borders” and “Peter John” were produced through Craven’s Movies From Malboro program. In this program, 22 filmmaking professionals mentor and collaborate with 32 students from more than a dozen universities. His seven featured films have played in 58 countries and 73 festivals. These include special screenings at the Smithsonian Institution, Lincoln Center, La Cinémathèque Française and the Constitutional Court of Johannesburg.
