Impeachment scholar Michael Gerhardt will present the Order of the Coif Distinguished Visitor Lecture at noon March 19 in the College of Law’s Hamann Auditorium.

During his presentation, “The Trump Impeachment: What Happened and What Did We Learn?” Gerhardt will provide a detailed look into the impeachment proceedings of Donald Trump.

Gerhardt is the Burton Craig Distinguished Professor of Jurisprudence at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the inaugural Richard Beeman Scholar in Residence at the National Constitution Center and the University of Pennsylvania Law School. The principal focus of his scholarship and public service has been constitutional conflicts between presidents and Congress.

Gerhardt is nationally recognized as an expert on impeachment, having authored more than 100 law review articles, six books and dozens of op-eds on the topic. He appeared before Congress twice to offer expert insight into impeachment hearings. The first time was in 1998, when President Bill Clinton was facing impeachment. At the time, Gerhardt was the only joint witness to testify before the House of Representatives and the only legal scholar invited to meet with the entire House behind closed doors to discuss the impeachment process. Gerhardt appeared again in December 2019 during proceedings to impeach Trump.

Gerhardt served as CNN’s expert on the impeachment process during the proceedings against Clinton and Trump.

Gerhardt’s presentation is free and open to the public. The talk has been approved for one hour of CLE credit.
