All students are invited to attend this year’s signature International Education Week event, Global Café and Connections, 5:30 to 7 p.m. Nov. 16 in the Hawks Hall Atrium.

The event, hosted by the College of Business and Global Affairs, is the main event of Nebraska’s International Education Week celebrations this year, which run from Nov. 1 to 24. First debuted during the 2019 IEW celebrations, the event invites the university community to sample food from local ethnic restaurants and experience cultural presentations from international students and community members. Registration is required in advance.

Global Café and Connections allows domestic and international students to connect and learn about cultures and traditions in the Nebraska community through ethnic cuisines prepared by local restaurant entrepreneurs. Many of the entrepreneurs immigrated to the U.S. and started their businesses while facing language and cultural barriers. While attendees taste new cuisines, they will also learn about stories of success in a new culture.

Last year, the event was held virtually during IEW, where students heard the journey of international alumni opening a restaurant. Event organizers are excited to bring the event back to campus in accordance with the university’s COVID-19 policies. Several student multicultural organizations are also partnering on the event, including NUMSA, the Asian Student Union, the Indian Student Association and more.

International Education Week is a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education to highlight the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide. The annual event is celebrated in more than 100 countries, spotlighting global diversity and encouraging others to experience new cultures. This year, more than 80 events are included in the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s expanded celebrations.
