‘Foxtrot,’ ‘Sweet Country’ open at the Ross

The Israeli film "Foxtrot," which examines how a family deals with grief after the loss of their son, opens April 20 at Nebraska's Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center.

Hard-hitting dramas examining reactions to the deaths of a soldier and a war veteran open April 20 at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center.

Both films, “Sweet Country” and “Foxtrot,” show through April 26. Also opening April 20 is the 2018 Vision Maker Film Festival. Continuing to show is “The Leisure Seeker.”

In “Foxtrot,” parents Michael and Dafna experience gut-wrenching grief after Army officials announce the death of their son, Jonathan.

Enveloped by grief, Michael becomes increasingly frustrated by overzealous mourning relatives and well-meaning military bureaucrats. While his sedated wife rests, Michael spirals into a whirlwind of anger only to experience an unfathomable twist.

Directed by Samuel Moaz, “Foxtrot” received the Grand Jury Prize at the 2017 Venice Film Festival and swept top honors a the Israeli Academy Awards. It is rated R for some sexual content, including graphic images, and brief drug use.

Sweet Country” follows the story of Sam, a middle-aged Aboriginal man who works for a preacher in the Australian outback, and Harry, a bitter war veteran.

When Harry moves into a nearby outpost, the preacher sends Sam and his family to help their new neighbor renovate some cattle yards. But, Sam’s relationship with the cruel and ill-tempered Harry quickly deteriorates. Disagreements between the two culminate in a violent shootout in which Sam kills Harry in self defense.

For murdering a white man, Sam becomes a wanted criminal and is forced to flee with his wife across the deadly outback.

A hunting party led by a local lawman pursues Sam. However, as the true details of the killing surface, the community begins to question if justice is being served.

The film, which is not rated, is directed by Warwick Thornton.

Starring Helen Mirren and Donald Sutherland, “The Leisure Seeker” tells the story of a couple traveling from Boston to the Ernest Hemingway home in Key West, Florida. During the journey, the couple recaptures their passion for life and love for each other.

The film, which shows through April 25, is rated R for some sexual material.
