The Confucius Institute will celebrate the impact and importance of martial arts in a two-part event Oct. 10, beginning with a lecture by martial arts instructor Roz Hussin before a screening of “Bruce Lee: A Warrior’s Journey.” The event will take place from 6:15 to 8:30 p.m. at the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center, and is free and open to the public.

Hussin’s pre-show lecture, “Acquiring Cultural Competency and Advocating Diversity Inclusion through Martial and Media Arts,” will focus on the history, philosophy and controversy of martial arts, as well as discuss the positive aspects of advocacy and diversity inherent in the media’s depiction of the sport. Along with practicing martial arts, Hussin works as an Instructional Design Technology Specialist at Nebraska.

“Bruce Lee: A Warrior’s Journey” will screen shortly after her lecture. The film is a glimpse into the life of martial arts icon Bruce Lee, examining the impact he had on the sport and representation in the media. A discussion will be held after the screening.
