February offers chance to skate, dance the night away

Students participating in Dance Marathon.

With everyone back on campus, February is an opportune time to join fellow Huskers in coming together as a community to celebrate and empower each other.

The observance of Black History Month, tons of Husker athletes in competition and a variety of community-focused events organized by students and alumni provide ample choices for being engaged with the campus community.

Black History Month exhibits and screenings: Feb. 3

Celebrate Black history in Nebraska with two amazing events Feb. 3. First, a documentary film screening and photography exhibit, featuring the works of Artes Johnson, is 4-6 p.m. in the Loft Gallery at the East Campus Union.

Also, head to the Great Plains Art Museum to check out a First Friday pop up art and photo exhibition created by BlackisBeautifulNE celebrating Black History Month and Black artists from Nebraska. The First Friday celebration is 5-7 p.m.

Free skating at Breslow Ice Hockey Center: Feb. 10

The university’s John Breslow Ice Hockey Center offers a free skate night each month. Skate free from 8 to 11 p.m. Feb. 10, and open skating is an option throughout the month. Whether you’re a seasoned pro on the ice or inching your way along the side wall, grab some friends and have some fun.

Glow Big Red: Feb. 15-16

Glow Big Red is an annual fundraiser event for the university to raise money for scholarships, colleges, programs, student organizations, inclusion, mental health and many other areas at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln.

If you’re a student, be sure to register your RSO for Glow Big Red! Everyone else, be sure to browse the organizations that need your support and make a plan for donating.

Dance Marathon: Feb. 25

Dance Marathon raises funds and awareness for the Children’s Hospital, culminating in a 13.1-hour HuskerThon where students and kids who’ve been treated at Children’s Hospital come together to dance the night away. Come support the Children’s Hospital and, perhaps, bust a move or two in Nebraska Union.

Students reveal the total raised during the 2020 HuskerThon on Feb. 29 in the Nebraska Union. The fundraising goal was $225,000.
