Education summit aims to expand sustainability, resilience instruction

Instructors sought to participate in growing campus discussion

A workshop series is providing an opportunity for University of Nebraska–Lincoln instructors to shape the ways in which sustainability and resilience are integrated into campus instruction.

Seeking to further recommendations in the university’s sustainability master plan, the Sustainability and Resilience Education Summit aims to enhance and expand related educational offerings on campus — from the integration of concepts into existing coursework to developing new, cross-disciplinary classes, curriculum and majors.

The summit — organized by the Chancellor’s Environment, Sustainability and Resilience Commission — begins with meetings on Aug. 13 and 20. Registration is available here.

“Educators from all colleges, units and disciplines are invited to participate in this growing and important conversation,” said Dave Gosselin, director of environmental studies and a co-director of the commission. “Ultimately, we hope this leads to the creation of a sustainability and resilience education community that will improve our university’s capacity to educate and develop students for the sustainability and resilience workforce.”

The summit will include five monthly, fall semester workshops. Each session will feature a related theme and include a 90-minute interactive session that will encourage an exchange of ideas. Prior to each workshop, participants will receive resources to prepare them for the discussion.

The August sessions will focus on developing a common language on the various dimensions of sustainability and resilience; and, the importance of the work in the context of the disciplines represented.
