The sale of dairy products at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s Dairy Store began in 1917 with all-you-can-drink milk for a nickel — but only for customers who brought their own glass.

More than 100 years later, the Dairy Store has replaced the milk offer with a lineup of ice cream treats and cheeses developed and produced by faculty, staff and students. And, just so you know, there's no longer a need to bring your own cup, dish or cone.

The store — which has a recipe catalog of more than 100 flavors — serves more than 100,000 people annually and dishes up 2 tons of ice cream during the Nebraska State Fair alone.

In celebration of National Ice Cream month in July, here’s a list of the Dairy Store’s top five flavors scooped annually — in no particular order. Each flavor is available to taste today.

Scarlet and Cream

The Dairy Store's flagship flavor is a vanilla base enhanced with a delicious Go Big Red strawberry swirl. For the university 150th year celebration, Scarlet and Cream has added chocolate chips and was renamed Nifty 150.

Mocha Madness

A sweet, coffee-flavored ice cream with chunks of English butter toffee and rich dark chocolate chips. The flavor is similar to the decadence of the Dairy Store’s Cappuccino Chocolate Chip.

Caramel Cashew

A nearly-perfect blend of sweet and salty to delight taste buds, this is a creamy caramel ice cream accented with salty, roasted cashews.

4-H Clover Mint

Honoring the more than 25,000 youth who participate each year in the Cornhusker State’s Nebraska Extension-led 4-H program, this flavor is a delightful mix of peppermint ice cream sprinkled with chocolate and white chocolate chips.
