Nebraska’s Kwame Dawes was recently honored for his ongoing collaborations with Sheldon Museum of Art.

Dawes, George Holmes Distinguished Professor of English and Glenna Luschei Editor of Prairie Schooner, has visited Sheldon for years, writing poetry in response to the artworks and galleries. He also integrates the museum into his creative writing curriculum, utilizing the space to help University of Nebraska–Lincoln students establish practices that will serve them throughout their careers.

“Dr. Dawes is really a role model for how professors on campus can engage with Sheldon Museum of Art,” said Susan Longhenry, director of Sheldon Museum of Art.

Earlier this year, Dawes was named Poet Laureate of Jamaica.

Dawes’ ongoing collaboration with the museum was celebrated during the Sheldon Art Association Gala on May 11. Click the video above to learn more about how Dawes integrates Sheldon into his poetry and teaching.
