The University of Nebraska Board of Regents welcomed one returning member and one new member Thursday during a virtual swearing-in ceremony for the NU system’s governing board.

Regent Tim Clare, representing District 1, was elected to the Board for a third term in 2020. Clare, a graduate of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, is a partner at Rembolt Ludtke law firm in Lincoln and vice chairman of the city’s West Haymarket Joint Public Agency, which oversees Pinnacle Bank Arena and the West Haymarket development project. District 1 covers most of the Lincoln area.

“Education is so transformative, and if we can change the trajectory of a family’s life through education, then I think we’ve accomplished our mission,” Clare said during Thursday’s ceremony.

Regent-Elect Jack Stark was elected to the Board’s District 2 seat, covering most of Sarpy County. Stark is a performance psychologist who served as team psychologist for the Husker football and basketball programs, as well as the University of Nebraska Omaha hockey program. He is also a former faculty member at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Stark earned his Ph.D. from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

“I have a lot of passion about this university. I care deeply about it,” said Stark, adding that he looks forward to working with NU System President Ted Carter and the chancellors.

Board of Regents Chairman Jim Pillen presided over the swearing-in ceremony, with Carter making welcoming remarks. A recording is available here.

The Board of Regents, consisting of eight elected regents from across the state plus four student regents representing each NU campus, is responsible for overall governance of the University of Nebraska system, including strategic leadership, approval of NU’s annual budget and tuition rates, and appointment of the system president. Board members serve staggered six-year terms.
