‘Ben is Back’ opens Jan. 11 at the Ross

“Ben is Back,” a drama about the impact of addiction on a family, opens Jan. 11 at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center.

The film takes place during the turbulent 24 hours after 19-year-old son Ben, played by Lucas Hedges, unexpectedly returns home on Christmas Eve morning. His mother Holly, played by Julia Roberts, struggles with contrasting feelings of relief and distrust as her son struggles to stay clean and reveals unexpected truths to those around him.

“Ben is Back” is rated R for language throughout and some drug use. It plays through Jan. 24.

Also playing through Jan. 17 are the films “Shoplifters” and “At Eternity’s Gate”.

Shoplifters” is a film about a family that survives through petty crime. Following a shoplifting session, the father, Osamu, and his son encounter a little girl in the freezing cold. At first reluctant to shelter the girl, Osamu’s wife agrees to take care of her after learning of the hardships she faces. The struggling family seems to live happily together until an incident reveals secrets, testing the bonds that unite them.

“Shoplifters” is rated R for some sexual content and nudity.

Directed by Julian Schnabel, “At Eternity’s Gate” is a journey through the world and mind of Vincent van Gogh. Staring Willem Dafoe as van Gogh, the film is not a true biography. Rather, the production features scenes generated through the artists’s letters, common agreement about events in his life that present as facts, hearsay, and moments that are imagined.

“At Eternity’s Gate” is rated R for some thematic content.
