The University of Nebraska–Lincoln Police Department has named Martin “Marty” Fehringer as its new assistant chief of police.

Fehringer, selected through a national search, is a 31-year veteran of the Lincoln Police Department. Most recently, he served as a captain, commanding LPD’s northeast team. Additional posts include serving as commander for LPD’s criminal investigations unit, the southeast team and operations duty division; and as a detective sergeant in criminal investigations.

He also has served as LPD’s liaison with Lincoln’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and advocate community, and was previously a board member for the Child Advocacy Center.

“Marty is a key addition to our department leadership, bringing public safety experience and a commitment to community engagement and collaboration with the campus community,” said Hassan Ramzah, UPD chief of police. “His experience strengthens our department and I look forward to his contributions as we build on a commitment to community policing and engagement across our university.”

Fehringer earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from the University of Nebraska at Omaha and is a graduate of the FBI National Academy (261st session). His first day on campus was Feb. 1.
