Members of the UNL community who were featured in award announcements between April 24-30 include Paul Breitkreutz, Paige Cornwell, Adam Fieldson, Bridget Goosby, John Kosch and Eric Malina.

Faculty/Staff

• Paul Breitkreutz, the UNL academic adviser for the Exploratory and Pre-Professional Advising Center, won the National Academic Advising Association’s Outstanding New Advising Award. Breitkreutz, known for his personality, sense of humor and trustworthiness, was nominated by Katie Kerr.

• Bridget Goosby, an associate professor of sociology, was recently elected to the General Social Survey Board of Overseers along with other distinguished social science scholars. The GSS Board of Overseers is comprised of a diverse array of esteemed scholars and is the most widely used data source in social science research. The board is instrumental in providing expertise and advice regarding the design and content of the GSS. For more information, go to http://go.unl.edu/it9e.

• Eric Malina, an associate professor of practice in the Department of Chemistry, was awarded the 2015 Association of the Students of the University of Nebraska Outstanding Educator of the Year Award for large classes at the ASUN new student government installation. UNL students voted using write-in ballots to recognize outstanding professors teaching small and large classes in the ASUN elections in March.

Students

• Paige Cornwell, a former student in the College of Journalism and Mass Communications, was part of a Seattle Times team that earned a Pulitzer Prize for breaking news. The Seattle Times staff earned the award for coverage of a landslide that claimed 43 lives in Oso, Washington. Read more at http://go.unl.edu/vcxs.

• John Kosch, a sophomore at UNL’s Glenn Korff School of Music, was named a winner in Downbeat magazine’s 38th annual student music awards. Kosch won the Downbeat award in “Original Compositions – Large Ensemble; Undergraduate College Outstanding Compositions: A New Hope.” A Lincoln native, Kosch is currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in music education with an emphasis in composition.

Alumni

• Adam Fieldson, a UNL Glenn Korff School of Music alumnus, won third prize and $7,500 in the 2015 Lotte Lenya competition, sponsored by the Kurt Weill Foundation of Music. The annual competition, created in 1998, honors the centenary of the birth of Lotte Lenya, a singer and actress, and one of the foremost interpreters of the music of her husband, Kurt Weill. The competition recognizes talented young singers and actors who are dramatically and musically convincing in repertoire, ranging from opera/operetta to contemporary Broadway scores with a focus on the works of Weill. The Lotte Lenya Competition is a theater and singing competition that emphasizes wide-ranging repertoire.
