Recent achievements for the campus community were earned by Nirupam Aich, Kinna Arp, Ethan Forcade, Brynn Fuelberth, Maggie Gochenour, Gary Hein, Luke Landkamer, Luke Lindquist, David Long, Bethany Meyers, Eddie Morrissette, Hattie Roberts, Shelby Stevens, Sophia Thomas, Business’s MBA@Nebraska program, Law’s Mediation Competition Team, and the Unified flag football team.

Honors

  • Nirupam Aich, associate professor of civl and environmental engineering, received an invitation to participate in an oral history interview with the Science History Institute. The institute is a library, museum and center for scholarship dedicated to promoting historical understanding of the sciences. The institute’s Center for Oral History interviews further that mission by recording the thoughts, memories and perspectives of scientific leaders. The collection includes more than 700 interviews that include Nobel laureates, National Academy members, National Medal recipients and other researchers whose work has made impacts in the scientific community.

  • Kinna Arp, Brynn Fuelberth, Bethany Meyers, Hattie Roberts and Sophia Thomas are among winners of the William N. Wasson Student Leadership and Academic Award from NIRSA, the national association for campus recreation leadership. The awards will be presented during the association’s annual conference, March 23-26 in Pittsburgh. Arp is a senior nutrition, exercise and health science major from Lincoln. Fuelberth is a senior environmental science major from Lincoln. Meyers is an educational administration graduate student from Omaha. Roberts is an educational administration graduate student from Williston, Vermont. And, Thomas is a senior political science major from Dallas.

  • Ethan Forcade (management major, senior), Maggie Gochenour (criminology and criminal justice, junior), Luke Landkamer (mechanical engineering, senior), Eddie Morrissette (mechanical engineering, sophomore) and Shelby Stevens (computer science, freshman), all members of the Air Force ROTC program, earned Air Force You Can Fly scholarships. The $3,500 award is designed to help students explore aviation before they decide on what career field to pursue.

  • Gary Hein received the Service to Agriculture Award from the National Alliance of Independent Crop Consultants for his contributions to establishing and directing the university’s Doctor of Plant Health program. The alliance has been a supporter of the plant health program. Alliance member companies have also provided experiential learning opportunities for Nebraska students.

  • John Lindquist, professor of agronomy and horticulture, received the Outstanding Research Award by the Weed Science Society of America during an annual joint meeting with the Northeastern Weed Science Society on Jan. 30 in Arlington, Virginia. This award is for society members who have conducted creative and innovative research with a significant impact on the scientific concepts or practices of weed science. It was established to recognize outstanding contributions to both applied and basic weed science research.

  • David Long, associate professor of theatre, received an award for his first short film, “Betty Lou Had a Son.” The film earned a top-five honor in the 2022 Louisiana Film Prize competition and will be screened in March at the Omaha Film Festival. In the film, a struggling musician (played by Long) is forced to care for his spirited mother suffering from early onset Alzheimer’s disease. The film was shot in May 2022 during three days in Shreveport, Louisiana. It premiered at the Louisiana Film Prize festival in October and continues on the film festival circuit through August.   • The Mediation Competition Team from the College of Law won first-place honors overall during a Feb. 9 invitational tournament at the University of Central Florida. First-place winners in tournament categories include: Mediator Team (Steve Lydick, Kelly Shanahan and Veronica Parish); and Attorney/Client Individual (Lydick and Parish). The team is coached by Kristen Blankley, professor of law. A complete list of the team’s awards is available here.

  • The University of Nebraska–Lincoln Unified flag football team won its second consecutive national championship. Learn more about the program and how to get involved.

Rankings

  • MBA@Nebraska, the College of Business’ online MBA program, was recently named one of the nation’s most outstanding programs by the Princeton Review. The program was listed in the No. 8 spot in the education services company’s list of Top 50 Online MBA Programs for 2023. This is the fifth consecutive year Nebraska’s program placed in the ranking’s top 20 and the second consecutive year in the top eight.
