Newman has been director of the Nebraska Prevention Center for Alcohol and Drug Abuse since 1979. He was a member of the planning committee and an evaluator for NU Directions, a nationally recognized model campus alcohol program. The Prevention Center recently has focused on the Nebraska Collegiate Consortium, which coordinates campus alcohol programs among most higher education institutions in the state. For the past 20 years, he has studied alcohol use patterns in China, particularly the use of noncommercial-traditional alcohol. He is director of the University of Nebraska American Exchange Center at Xi’an Jiaotong University, in Xi’an, China
