As the University of Nebraska–Lincoln welcomes students back this week in the run up to the fall semester, Nebraska Today is highlighting the many summer activities of Husker students, faculty and staff.

• Melissa Araiza, law student and president of the Nebraska chapter of the American Constitution Society, represented the chapter at the society’s national convention in Washington, D.C. She also is working in the Nebraska Attorney General’s office, assisting on consumer protection investigations, including business fraud, deceptive trade practices, and security and data breaches. The work allowed her to attend a daylong Federal Trade Commission hearing that featured attorneys general from across the nation.
• Brady Baker, a Master of Arts student with specialization in intercollegiate athletic administration, worked in the advancement office of Texas Christian University, gaining fundraising experience.
• Kimberly Barton, law student, participated in Project Harmony’s Summer Legal Institute internship program. After training, Barton was placed with Joy Suder, an Omaha attorney, whose practice focuses on guardian and defense counsel appointments in the Douglas County juvenile court. Part of her work centered on creating resources for LGBTQ+ youth in Nebraska’s child welfare and juvenile justice system.
• Luke Bogus, marketing and management major, interned at Microsoft in Seattle. As an Explore Intern, Bogus expanded his coding and business knowledge by exploring software engineering and program management disciplines.
• Bayley Brake, accounting major, interned in the accounting and finance department at Guy Harvey Outpost. She budgeted for and developed special events for Guy Harvey hotels, including “Pup and Sups,” an annual dog surfing contest at Florida’s St. Augustine Beach.
• Neil Celani, a master of fine arts student in ceramics, completed an eight-week ceramic art residency in Lima, Peru. The project focused on study of historical Peruvian ceramics.
• Laura Derowitsch, software engineering major, interned as a software developer at Bulu, a Lincoln-based company that creates private label subscription boxes.
• Kasey Dunaski, design and technical theatre major, served as a stage management intern for three shows over two months at the Hangar Theatre Company in Ithaca, New York.
• Leah Engquist, biochemistry major, performed research on the glycine receptor as part of the Pain Undergraduate Research Experience. The project is funded by the National Institutes of Health National Institute for Neurological Disorders and Strokes at Duquesne University in Pittsburg.
• Audrey Erker, business administration major, worked a corporate training and organizational development internship at Nelnet. She also studied abroad at the University of Oxford.
• Kevin Flanegin, graduate student in business, worked as a whitewater raft guide on the Arkansas River near Buena Vista, Colorado.
• Stewart Guderian, law student, worked at Clarion Associates, a national land-use consulting firm with headquarters in Denver. She assisted with projects across the United States.
• Nicholas Hunt, Master of Arts student with specialization in intercollegiate athletic administration, interned at Opendorse as a sales planner; began a graduate assistantship with the Husker ticket office; traveled to Denver and Orlando for college athletic conferences; and went on a mission trip to Minneapolis with the nonprofit Managers on a Mission.
• Amanda Kowalewski, agricultural economics major, studied abroad in China learning about agriculture and business. She also interned with the U.S. Meat Export Federation in Denver, assisting with international agricultural trade and marketing to promote United States beef, pork and lamb exports.
• Blaise Lanoha, a doctoral student in human sciences with specialization in leadership studies, completed a summer internship with Gardenswartz and Rowe, Los Angeles-based leadership consulting firm that specializes in diversity and inclusion.
• Tessa Lengeling, law student, worked as an Equal Justice Works Rural Summer Legal Corps Fellow at Iowa Legal Aid in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
• Ariana Lopez, law student, worked in the public defender office in San Francisco. Her service was in branches for Compton and Long Beach.
• Matthew Meacham, computer science and mathematics major, served as a software engineering intern at Microsoft in Redmond, Washington. He served on the Azure data factory team.
• Mary Morton, management major, worked full-time in the Arbor Day Foundation’s carbon development department, aggregating details about projects the foundation funds to plant trees and monitor carbon sequestration. The work included helping with corporate partnerships when large corporations decided to use carbon offsets to mitigate emissions.
• Mauricio Murga Rios, law student, worked at Monzon, Guerra and Associates, a small law firm in Lincoln that specializes in immigration, personal injury and criminal law. Highlights include writing a bond appeal brief, unlawful presence waivers, an alien smuggling waiver, motion to reconsider temporary protection status, and an asylum brief involving humanitarian asylum, withholding of removal and the convention against torture.
• Katherine Osbon, hospitality, restaurant and tourism management major, interned for six weeks at Palazzo Galletti, a bed and breakfast in Florence, Italy.
• Hector Palala, teaching, learning and teacher education major, conducted research into Mayan education and technology integration at the Universidad de San Carlos in Guatemala. He also taught at the university.
• Gabriela Palomo, natural resources and applied ecology major, developed a dissertation involving ocelots in Guatemala and wrote various side papers related to carnivores. She also attended a camera trap workshop at the Smithsonian Research Center in Virginia.
• Soham Patel, a computer science major, worked with Nebraska 4-H in the STEMentors program, an electronic learning service that offers educational experiences to afters-chool and summer camp programs.
• Yassine Rfissa, educational studies and teaching, curriculum and learning major, taught an online course on the modern Arab world for the Department of Modern Languages and Literature; served as a conference assistant with university conference services; and worked toward finalizing a faculty-led study abroad program proposal to Morocco for summer 2020.
• Hilary Sayre, law student, served as an Army Judge Advocate General Corps summer intern at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas.
• Maggie Schlecht, international business major, interned in an Anheuser-Busch wholly-owned distributor in Oakland, California.
• Anna Singharath, global studies major, studied abroad in Morocco. Study areas included French, Islamic society and peace, and conflict resolution.
• Nick Siscoe, a computer science and engineering major, worked as a software engineering at Hudl. The work included improving software that 98 percent of high school coaches use to manage game film.
• Renata Trefiglio Mendes Gomes, graduate student in child, youth and family studies, traveled to São Paulo, Brazil, to develop partnerships with institutions that conduct and disseminate research in the education field. Her goal was to present a doctoral project about bringing the Teachers and Parents Program to Brazil.
• Jared Yost, a computer science major, worked as an intern at Garmin in Kansas City, developing software for the Forerunner, a running watch.
