UNL’s 2014 Week Without Violence will include a presentation by Curt Brungardt, co-founder of Jana’s Campaign.
Week Without Violence is an annual event dedicated to educating individuals about preventing relationship violence. Events at UNL, organized by the Women’s Center, are Oct. 10-15.
“We hope to get a lot of people to come,” said Layla Younis, a program assistant at the center. “We want to raise awareness about relationship violence and how to prevent it.”
Brungardt experienced the consequences of relationship violence in 2008 when his 25-year-old stepdaughter, Jana Mackey, was killed by her ex-boyfriend. Jana’s Campaign is an organization that uses the story of Mackey’s life and death to help reduce violence against women and engage men in ending relationship violence.
Brungardt’s presentation, “Engaging Men in Relationship Violence Prevention,” is at 7 p.m., Oct. 13, in the Kauffman Center Great Hall.
Another speaker, independent filmmaker Ralph Scott, will discuss the social and cultural expectations of masculinity and sexual assault from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Oct. 10. PREVENT, UNL’s relationship violence prevention peer educators, will co-facilitate this interactive forum through bystander intervention scenarios in the Georgian Suite of the Nebraska Union.
Scott is a filmmaker-in-residence at UNL. His film “Barbasol” screens at 5 p.m. Oct. 9 in the Gaughan Multicultural Center. The film explores the social and cultural expectations of masculinity through a father-son relationship.
