UNL remains tied at No. 101 among top national universities in the 2014 U.S. best colleges ranking in U.S. News & World Report. It shares the spot with seven other schools.
Among public national universities, UNL is No. 47, joining all other Big Ten universities in the Top 50. Last year, the university was ranked No. 47 among all public national universities, and was No. 49 in 2012. The university is also listed in the ranking report among “A-Plus Schools for B Students.”
The national universities category consists of the 281 institutions (173 public, 101 private and seven for-profit) that offer a wide range of undergraduate majors as well as master’s and doctoral degrees; some emphasize research.
Data on up to 16 indicators of academic quality are gathered from each institution and tabulated. Among the indicators are student ACT scores and class rank, peer assessment, graduation and retention rates, faculty resources, class size, faculty-to-student ratio, financial resources and alumni giving. Schools are ranked by a total weighted score.
Earlier this year, U.S. News & World Report included several of UNL’s graduate programs in its list of top programs. They included the College of Law (No. 61); the College of Education and Human Sciences (No. 51) and its speech language pathology program (No. 17); and the College of Engineering’s biological and agricultural engineering program (No. 10).
In the publication’s top humanities and social sciences graduate school rankings that were released in March, UNL was ranked No. 69 of 94 in sociology, No. 63 of 134 in English, No. 74 of 125 in history, No. 54 of 86 in political science and No. 78 of 214 in psychology.
