University closed Jan. 9 to honor President Carter

President Jimmy Carter holds the Nobel Peace Prize during the award ceremony on Dec. 10, 2002 in Oslo, Norway. Carter, the nation's 39th president, died Dec. 29 at the age of 100. He is the longest-lived president in the nation's history.

The University of Nebraska–Lincoln will observe a National Day of Mourning for President Jimmy Carter on Jan. 9. As a result, the university will be closed, and all classes will be canceled.

Instructors are encouraged to work directly with students to reschedule any impacted course requirements.

As announced in a Jan. 6 email to campus, the day will be recognized as a paid declared holiday for all regular leave-eligible employees. Designated essential employees are expected to report as scheduled and will be compensated according to campus payroll policies. Payroll Services will provide additional instructions regarding leave processing and reporting to the university’s business community.

Carter, the 39th president of the United States and recipient of the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize, died Dec. 29 at the age of 100 at his home in Plains, Georgia. He was the longest-living president in U.S. history.

President Joe Biden issued an executive order declaring Jan. 9 a National Day of Mourning, and the federal government will be closed. Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen has also declared a closure of state government offices on that day.

The University Health Center will remain open on Jan. 9. The university’s events calendar will be updated to reflect any rescheduled campus events.
