The University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s School of Art, Art History and Design will host two Hixson-Lied Visiting Artist Lectures the week of March 7.
Rachel Adams, the chief curator and director of programs at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts in Omaha, will present her lecture on March 9. Greg Schmidt, a graphic designer, will present his lecture on March 10.
Each lecture is at 5:30 p.m. in Richards Hall, Room 15. The lectures are free and open to the public. They will also be accessible via Zoom. Connect with each in the related links to the right
Adams’ areas of interest are varied, but always focus on creating meaningful connections for artists. She focuses on the crossover between contemporary art and architecture, performance and video and new media practices.
Her past curatorial appointments include senior curator at UB Art Galleries, curator-in-residence at Disjecta Contemporary Art Center, and associate curator at Arthouse at the Jones Center (now Contemporary Austin).
In 2018, Adams curated “Ernesto Burgos: Implications;” “BRACHA: Pietà—Eurydice—Medusa;” and co-curated “Introducing Tony Conrad: A Retrospective,” the first posthumous exhibition of Tony Conrad’s work at the University at Buffalo Art Galleries with the Albright Knox Art Gallery.
Her 2017 exhibition, “Wanderlust: Actions, Traces, Journeys 1967-2017” — a 50-year survey of artists performing in the landscape — was awarded grants from the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts with a catalogue by MIT Press.
Adams holds a Master of Arts degree in exhibition and museum studies from the San Francisco Art Institute and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
Her forthcoming projects include exhibitions with Maya Dunietz in 2022 and the group exhibition, “Presence in the Pause.”
Schmidt is a graphic designer practicing in Richmond, Virginia. His multi-disciplinary approach reflects techniques and practices found in brand systems, print publications, environmental and exhibition design.
He maintains a focus in typography, image making, visual storytelling, photography and graphic design for built spaces.
He currently works as an exhibition graphic designer at Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Schmidt holds a Bachelor of Arts in graphic design from Flagler College and a Master of Fine Arts in visual communication from Virginia Commonwealth University.
The remaining lectures in the series are:
• March 23: Kathryn Gleason, art history. Gleason is professor of landscape architecture and a member of the Cornell Institute for Archaeology and Material Studies at Cornell University.
• April 6: Chip Thomas, interdisciplinary. Thomas, a.k.a. jetsonorama, is a photographer, public artist and physician, who has been working in a small clinic on the Navajo Nation since 1987.
• April 13: David Lubin, art history. Film and art historian Lubin will present “Edward Hopper and Classic American Cinema.” He is the Charlotte C. Weber Professor of Art at Wake Forest University.
Underwritten by the Hixson-Lied Endowment with additional support from other sources, the series enriches the culture of the state by providing a way for Nebraskans to interact with luminaries in the fields of art, art history and design. Each visiting artist or scholar spends one to three days on campus to meet with classes, participate in critiques and give demonstrations.
