University of Nebraska–Lincoln supervisors and managers can learn how to use stay interviews to better understand and retain staff during a live, virtual training session.

Organizational Development and Training will offer the session from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Sept. 29. Participants will learn how to structure a stay interview, what questions to ask and how to respond to employee feedback.

Unlike exit interviews, which take place after an employee has decided to leave, stay interviews are conducted while employees are still with the university. The structured conversations give supervisors an opportunity to learn what keeps employees engaged, what could lead them to consider leaving and what could improve their experience.

Stay interviews are a simple, low-cost tool supervisors can use to support staff retention and engagement.

Registration for the training is available here. A stay interview web resource page also provides guidance, sample questions and tips for supervisors who want to get started.
