Michael Sam will discuss his experiences as the first openly gay NFL player at 7:30 p.m. March 14 in the Nebraska Union’s Centennial Room.
Sam is a former defensive end who was a consensus All-American and the Southeastern Conference defensive player of the year during his senior season at the University of Missouri. He publicly came out as gay toward the end of his college football career.
He was drafted by the St. Louis Rams in 2014 but was cut in the preseason. Sam then signed with the Montreal Alouettes before the 2015 season, becoming the first openly gay player in the Canadian Football League. He retired from football in August 2015 and is now an author and motivational speaker.
The event, sponsored by the University Program Council, is free for students with a valid NCard and $5 for faculty, staff and the public.
