Three new films open at the Ross

"Weiner" trailer

Three new films are opening at the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center June 24.

The documentary, “Weiner,” takes place in 2013, where Anthony Weiner—still reeling from the sex scandal that ended his political career two years earlier—is back in the spotlight as he mounts a comeback campaign for New York City mayor. But it’s not long before history repeats itself and new sexting allegations leave Weiner and his aides scrambling to contain the damage.

Granted unfettered access to Weiner’s campaign, filmmakers Josh Kriegman and Elyse Steinberg capture a behind-the-scenes look at the political machine as it breaks down. “Weiner” won the 2016 Sundance Grand Jury Prize for US Documentary.

This film will be showing through July 7. It is rated R for language and some sexual material.

Also showing at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln theater is “Dark Horse,” a true story about a group of friends competing in horse races. Raised on a slagheap allotment, their foal grows into an unlikely champion, beating the finest thoroughbreds in the land, before suffering a near fatal accident. Nursed back to health by the love of his owners, he makes a remarkable recovery and returns to the track for a heart-stopping comeback.

“Dark Horse” is rated PG and will be showing through June 30.

Francofonia” is set in Louvre Museum’s history and artworks. Director Alexander Sokurov applies his personal vision onto staged re-enactments and archives for this portrait of real-life characters Jacques Jaujard and Count Franziskus Wolff-Metternich and their compulsory collaboration at the Louvre Museum under the Nazi Occupation. These two remarkable men – enemies, then collaborators - share an alliance that would become the driving force behind the preservation of museum treasures.

This film will be showing through June 30.

Finally, held over is “Maggie’s Plan.” Greta Gerwig is Maggie Hardin, a vibrant and practical 30-something New Yorker working in education. Unable to find love, Maggie decides to have a child on her own. But, when she meets John Harding, an anthropology professor and struggling writer. Maggie falls in love and adjusts her plans for motherhood. Those plans are soon complicated as John is unhappily married to Georgette Harding, an ambitious academic driven by her work.

“Maggie’s Plan” will be showing through June 30.
