Every employee featured in this series was nominated by a member of the campus community.

Today, the series launches with Lexi Thomas, an undergraduate support associate for the School of Biological Sciences.

Thomas sat down with commission members to discuss what drives her to success on and off campus.

Tell us a little about yourself.

I am an alumna of UNL, I majored in classics and minored in English and women's and gender studies. I moved to Lincoln in 2015 from Hershey, Pennsylvania. At home, I have two cats named Zephyr and Peanut. I am also an avid reader and lover of nature!

How long have you been at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln?

I have been the undergraduate support associate for the School of Biological Sciences since March 2023. Prior to that, I was an intern and student worker for the University Archives and Special Collections beginning in June 2020.

What do you look forward to when you come to work?

I always look forward to hearing about the interesting projects happening in my department. While my background is in the humanities, I greatly enjoy hearing about what School of Biological Sciences faculty and students are working on — and I love that I have the opportunity to support them in whatever administrative ways I can. I think the best part about working at a university is constantly being surrounded by new ideas and interesting perspectives!

What is your favorite memory at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln?

My favorite memory is probably organizing the Undergraduate Research Symposium for the School of Biological Sciences. It's a pleasure to see the various topics that students in the department are passionate about. It's a great opportunity to support our students and learn something new at the same time. I'm excited for our symposium that is coming up this April!

What is your life like outside of work?

I love to craft outside of work. I specifically enjoy crocheting and sewing. I find that fiber art is a wonderful creative outlet; I love nothing more than cozying up with a good cup of tea and just making whatever comes to mind. I also enjoy playing cozy and relaxing video games, my favorite is Animal Crossing. When it's nice outside, I love to go hiking. Platte River State Park is my favorite place to hike at the moment!

What is something most people do not know about you?

Most people might not know that I love photography. I collect older digicams, I love the vintage feel and colors that older digicams provide. I recently got a Sony DSC-W55, and I've been having a lot of fun with that. I also have a Canon that I like to bring with me on hikes to take wildlife photos with. Life is short and I love preserving memories.
