Suicide gatekeeper training available online

.

Faculty, staff and students at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln can access free QPR suicide prevention gatekeeper training remotely.

While REACH in-person trainings are unavailable, Big Red Resilience and Well-being is offering QPR online training. QPR stands for question, persuade, refer — three steps anyone can learn to help save a life from suicide.

“With this 60-minute online training, anyone can become equipped to help save a life,” Connie Boehm, director of Big Red Resilience and Well-being, said. “By increasing the number of faculty, staff, and students trained in our Nebraska community, we will increase the likelihood that Nebraskans at-risk for suicide will be identified earlier and connected to the help they need.”

Individuals or groups can request access codes for the online training.

The university hopes to increase the number of trained gatekeepers to 4,000 by fall 2020. Thus far, 2,015 individuals have been trained. The university’s suicide prevention efforts are supported by a Garret-Lee Smith Suicide Prevention grant.
