Applications are being accepted from students for the Geographic Information Systems Day Map Competition. The competition invites students to showcase their mapping skills, share their stories and compete for prizes while exploring creative geospatial visualization and analysis.
Maps must be submitted by Oct. 30 using the competition form.
Each map must include a brief description of no more than 400 words explaining the map’s purpose, data sources and key insights. See the competition guidelines for information about eligibility, judging criteria and other details.
All digital maps will be showcased on the map gallery webpage. Selected maps will be printed and displayed in Love Library Nov. 18-25. Dates are subject to change.
The competition is open to students of all skill levels, including those with no prior geographic information systems experience. No specialized GIS skills or software are required. The competition offers students from any background an opportunity to engage with data and mapmaking.
Certificates and gift cards of $100, $75 and $50 will be awarded to the first-, second- and third-place winners, respectively, during the Geographic Information Systems Day program and reception from 11 a.m. to noon Nov. 18 at Love Library.
The invited speaker will be Shu-Mei Huang, coastal geographic information systems specialist at the South Carolina Sea Grant Consortium.
Additional details about the event schedule will be announced.
