The first in a series of Flyover concerts featuring the works of students in the Glenn Korff School of Music is 7:30 p.m. Oct. 15 in Westbrook Music Building, Room 119.
The concert, which is free and open to the public, is one of five Korff School performances during the week of Oct. 10-16. Those performances, listed below, include an Evening of Choirs on Oct. 14.
The Flyover New Music Series is a series presented by composition students. The series is administered and overseen by composition faculty and students.
This first concert, “Introspection,” will feature three works by master’s students John David Cope and Coral Douglas.
The concert opens with “Unfettered” by Cope, a composition for solo piano that plunges into the world of minimalism.
“When I wrote this piece last semester, I wanted to test out my piano skills and see if I could write something that was simple, while also being complex,” Cope said. “In other words, I wanted to utilize the simplicity of minimalism coupled with the complexity of my personal composition style, which is based on syncopation and extended harmonies.”
The program also includes “Circuit” by Douglas and “An Ineffable Heat” by Cope.
The Flyover New Music Series is the only concert series in the Glenn Korff School of Music in which students are the core of not only the music, but the production. Student volunteers compose and perform all music, organize all performances and work on support teams for Flyover concerts. In collaboration with faculty advisers, students oversee publicity and community outreach for Flyover.
The next concert of the Flyover New Music Series will be Dec. 6.
