Souto sketches personal, artistic journeys for Faculty 101

Video: Faculty 101 teaser

Launched by University Communication in fall 2018, Faculty 101 delivers regular insights — some serious, others silly — into the work and lives of Husker faculty.

Hosted by Mary Jane Bruce, the stories explore what inspires faculty and their research, along with the lessons they’ve learned in the classroom and field.

Listen: Faculty 101 on the art of Francisco Souto

The latest episode of Faculty 101 focuses on Francisco Souto, who directs the university’s School of Art, Art History and Design. A native of Venezuela, Souto explains what drew him to Nebraska — and what has kept him here. He also talks with Bruce about dealing with a series of injuries and transitioning from a copper-based, 17th-century printmaking technique to graphite drawing.

Later, Souto describes how a rural upbringing in the shadow of the Andes Mountains informed his creativity and inspired him to render his early memories of a country that has since undergone major upheaval.

Bruce and Souto wrap the episode by discussing the value of art and studying abroad.
