Sheldon Museum of Art has opened four exhibitions for the University of Nebraska’s fall semester.
The exhibitions — “Uncanny Encounters: The Disturbing, Surreal, and Supernatural in American Art,” “Voting is People Power,” “Sheldon in Focus: Jacob Lawrence,” and a reimagined presentation of the Collection Galleries — run through Dec. 29. They draw from the museum’s collection of nearly 13,000 objects to offer thematic presentations that fosters inquiry, discovery and dialogue.
“Uncanny Encounters: The Disturbing, Surreal, and Supernatural in American Art“ explores how enigmatic imagery in art can elicit uneasy feelings — whether intended by the artist or not.
Featuring works that support political campaigns, advocate for voting rights, and capture the energy of elections, “Voting is People Power” encourages individuals to actively engage in the process of democracy.
“Sheldon in Focus: Jacob Lawrence” highlights two significant works by the artist: the painting Paper Boats (1948) and the eight-print series, “Eight Studies for The Book of Genesis” (1990). This exhibition is presented in conjunction with the Lied Center for the Performing Arts’ fall season which includes Step Afrika’s performance of “The Migration,” based on Lawrence’s iconic paintings, "The Migration Series."
Admission is free.
